Differently Similar

I took a stare, a long cold stare
Of all that bares its soul to me
And although complained it wasn’t fair
He bore it all, all over me

I walked along a street at night
No reason but because I can
Watch a man in the night
Who takes a soon forgotten flight

I’m cold and dark
Mysterious
Differently similar
I think I choose

He took a stare, a long cold stare
And hoped I’d bare my soul away
Without a thought, I raised my finger

And continued
Differently similar
Alone in this world

This poem is basically from the point of view, originally, of an “emo” but really could be the same for anyone who considers themself a member of a stereotypical group such as that..

The point being, this character anyway tells themself they are dressing or being that way to be different, when they are really doing it to fit in/feel they belong to something, just like those in any other “high school group”.

I feel I could have expressed the above better than in this poem, and it is in fact something covered in my novel “Pigs on Fire” which may be finished some time!

This seems to me to be written from the point of view of the author who felt that somehow, someone had “laid him bare”. For a moment, the things that he feared or wanted to express were so close to the surface that he could see them. But the person there went and took a soon forgotten flight.
Forget ‘emo’, this is for the guy that felt/feels that he is the only one that feels this way. If he’d looked in the other direction, he might have seen masses of people all differently similar. Offer the guy a hand rather than dismissing him as “emo” or the subject of your next book.

That is a good interpretation :) and I am certainly not dismissing him, or using “emo” or any other stereotypical group in a negative way.. rather just looking at what makes people choose to be a part of these groups, the emotions behind it.
